SMS Based College Information System

Introduction

Networks continue to evolve, growing in capability and complexity. A diverse range of platforms, protocols and physical assets provides PC Management, Remote Information Access, and Remote Control Software solutions, with the continuous challenge of being able to offer support to a variety of configurations and to ensure that critical IT infrastructure is available when needed most.

The goal of the project is to design a Mobile SMS College Information System using Microsoft Visual C++ and mobile FBUS technology.

Existing System

The Existing information systems are based on classical database based technology and web based technologies. Since all the users of the web based systems were not adapted to the technology or not having basic web access from their location.

Even though the modern GPRS enabled cell phones are capable of viewing the graphical web content, most of the users, particularly the elder people were not using those luxurious phones. So most of the cell phone users were not having web facility to access the necessary in formation from Internet.

The Proposed System

A typical college office will have lot of information to share with its students and the Parents of the students like Test/Exam results, Fees Reminders and other kind of reports. Even though lot of colleges have online web interfaces to provide such information, students or parents will not be comfortable with accessing those information using their PCs and most of them will not have own PCs or internet facility in their home. In this project we propose a simple SMS bases information System to Provide those information on request.

The following commands were successfully tested over the mobile SMS interface of the project

Missed Call Command:

A Missed call from a phone will send the main menu of the college information system to the remote user through SMS.

Conclusion and Scope for Future Improvements

Proposed software was successfully developed using Microsoft Visual C++ on Windows XP and tested on network. The Mobile SMS interface was also implemented and tested successfully. By using this mobile interface, a user can get the necessary information from college office from a remote location.

The SMS commands for 1.Get College Notice Board, 2 Get the Fess Details of particular number and 3. Get the Mark Details of particular number, were successfully implemented and tested over mobile phone.

The response of the information system was good. But it was very much depend upon the mobile service provider's network condition.

In future one may add additional functionality to the information system to make it as a more practical college information system.
